Radio Station Requests

Ed Nuhfer, National Director of Promotion Information Services at Warner Bros., wrote some helpful guidelines for the Madonna mailing list, about "request etiquette." Here are his ideas, adapted for KevinFriends:

There are several ways a fan can interact with a radio (or television) station and have it be effective for both the artist's career and the fan's enjoyment of hearing their songs on the radio.

  1. Try to use telephone request lines rather than e-mail. The effect is more immediate. Most stations do not even tally requests from their websites.

  2. Make your request to a station that by the nature of their format, can play a Kevin Sharp record. Program directors play only those artists that fit the overall sound of their station. No matter how many requests for Kevin Sharp that you make to an alternative or rock station, they are NOT going to play his record.

  3. If you do e-mail a request to a station, do it from their website, and only if they have provided a form or mail address specifically for requests.

  4. When you call a station, be polite to the person on the phone. Rudeness and threats will get you (and Kevin Sharp) nowhere.

  5. Don't flood the station with calls either -- they very easily pick up on repeat callers and will dismiss the multiple calls as rabid fan response and not multiple listeners calling for the same song.

  6. E-mail or call only those stations in the market where you live.

  7. If you use e-mail to send a request, do so only once in a while. Even if you attempt to mail anonymously, where the mail comes from stays in the header.
